I have never been a devoted observer of Halloween. It seems that people really enjoy dressing up like someone else, having an excuse to eat a bunch of candy, and massaging their sore feet at the end of the night.
My problem with this is that I have always loved being myself, and I love wearing my clothes. I am not a candy monster, either, but I do love having sore feet after a day at the mall, or a stint out dancing!
So, as I got older, and began to outgrow the idea of dressing as a candy corn witch or a snow queen, both of which were my go-to costumes for many years, I would dress up for Halloween as myself. With that, I would do my own thing on Halloween night, and I enjoyed it!
You can eat candy anytime you want to! The same way that you can dress up… anytime you want to!
Why does there have to be a widely accepted occasion? Bring out the ballgown on a random Tuesday! Wear your fanciest shoes out next weekend, or do some dramatic makeup for your dinner plans. Do what makes you happy!
Going to an arts school, though, I knew I had to come up with something. Something that was still me.
Elle Woods has been a hallmark of female empowerment and an inspiration to me for many years. Or, wait, did I mean Reese Witherspoon?
Do you see how she is synonymous with this role? I hope she does not mind, it only speaks to her iconic, perfectly girly, and hard-working nature.
But, I think that Legally Blonde was a success from the beginning. The fact that it is still revered today only further proves that. With the costuming, the character development, the plot, and the casting, how could you not love everything about it?
Well, I am dressing up as Elle Woods for Halloween, and here is why you should find your inner Elle Woods, too.
Elle Woods defies the norm by breaking out of her planned path to graduate, get married, and live a settled life. Instead, she studies her tail off and lands an admission to Harvard Law School.
What, like it’s hard?
Elle Woods, Legally Blonde
Even though she struts around in her designer shoes, with perfectly manicured nails, precisely maintained highlights, and a killer outfit at all times, she is a total queen on the inside!
You can employ these aspects in your daily life RIGHT NOW!!!
I am an all pink and proper all the time type of person. Frills, bows, flouncy gowns, my beloved tiaras. That has always been me. I enjoy picking out a curated outfit everyday. It presents my best to the world, brings my inner beauty outside, and it is when I feel my prettiest, most confident self.
This is not to say that some days, I, too, get up and could not be bothered. Other times, I roll out of bed and put on leggings and a pullover. But, do I feel badly about these times? Well…
Just kidding. No, I do not. Because depending on the events of the day, I dress how I like, and that is that.
I will always show up prepared, but that does not mean my hair is always curled to perfection and I am donning my latest shopping trip finds. And that is okay!
All I am saying is if you can find these things that you feel bring out your inner-most self, and reflect it on the outside, then you can channel Elle Woods, even in your everyday life. Or, maybe your Elle Woods is more like Princess Leia. Maybe it is your mother, or your sister, or Michelle Obama, or even a little bit of all the women in your life!
It does not even matter who it is. It just matters that you have role models and others in your life that support you on your journey.
If your inspirations build you up on the inside, you can become one step closer to being the queen you are on the outside!
I love it! You definitely made me smile . Great advice. Same thoughts my mother always shared. She would say it takes no more energy to dress well than to dress any other way. Her shoes would match her purse and her crazy patterned pants would be a perfect accent to her seamlessly tailored shirt. Sounds like you are kindred spirits.
